Tsavo West National Park is located in Taita-Taveta County in southeastern Kenya, approximately 240 kilometers from Nairobi and 250 kilometers from Mombasa. Covering an area of roughly 9,065 square kilometers, it stands as Kenya's second-largest national park. The park is separated from the adjoining Tsavo East National Park by the main A109 Nairobi-Mombasa highway and a railway line, with both parks forming the core of the expansive Tsavo Conservation Area. The landscape of Tsavo West is defined by rugged volcanic terrain, rolling hills, open savannahs, acacia woodlands, and rocky ridges. One of its most famous features is Mzima Springs, a natural oasis where millions of gallons of fresh water filtered through the lava rocks of the Chyulu Hills emerge daily. Other notable natural landmarks include the dark volcanic fields of the Shetani Lava Flow, the Chaimu crater, the Five Sisters hills, and Lake Jipe along the Tanzanian border.Tsavo West harbors diverse wildlife populations, including lions, leopards, elephants, Cape buffaloes, and black rhinos. It contains the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, dedicated to protecting endangered black rhinos, while Mzima Springs supports populations of hippopotamuses and Nile crocodiles. Over 600 bird species have been documented in the area. Visitor activities include game drives, guided nature walks, cave exploration at Shetani, birdwatching, and rock climbing along the solid gneiss cliffs of Kichwa Tembo. The park also holds notable historical significance. It is internationally famous for the 1898 Man-Eaters of Tsavo, a pair of lions that attacked workers during the construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railway bridge over the Tsavo River. Additionally, the park preserves historical sites from the First World War East African Campaign, during which British and German forces engaged in military encounters across the bushland.
