Mkomazi National Park is a 3,245-square-kilometer wildlife reserve located in northeastern Tanzania across the Kilimanjaro and Tanga regions. First established as a game reserve in 1951 and upgraded to national park status in 2008, it lies along the base of the Pare and Usambara Mountains. Along its northern boundary, Mkomazi borders Kenya's Tsavo West National Park, together forming the 43,000-square-kilometer Greater Tsavo Ecosystem. The park marks the southernmost extent of the semi-arid Sahel zone in East Africa, featuring a landscape dominated by Acacia-Commiphora woodlands, nyika bush, baobab trees, and rocky hills, with the Umba River serving as a major water source. Its name originates from a Pare word meaning "scoop of water," referencing the region's dry climate. The park serves as a critical refuge for two endangered species: the black rhinoceros and the African wild dog. Managed in collaboration with conservation trusts, dedicated fenced sanctuaries within Mkomazi allow for the protection, breeding, and supervised tourist viewing of black rhinos. Mkomazi hosts semi-arid species that are uncommon in other Tanzanian parks, including the gerenuk, fringe-eared oryx, and lesser kudu, alongside migratory elephant herds, buffaloes, giraffes, hartebeests, and predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Over 450 bird species have been cataloged in the park, notably the vulturine guineafowl, secretary bird, martial eagle, and violet wood-hoopoe.Tourism activities in Mkomazi include vehicle game drives, guided walking safaris with armed rangers, hill hiking, bird watching, and specialized rhino viewing trips. The main entrance at Zange Gate is located six kilometers from the town of Same along the highway connecting Arusha and Dar es Salaam, with additional access through Njiro, Kamakota, and Umba gates. Air travel is facilitated by Kisima Airstrip in the park's central region near the rhino sanctuary. Visitor accommodation includes permanent tented camps, wilderness retreats, public campsites, and guest houses in nearby Same Town.
