Bale Mountains National Park is located in the Oromia Region of southeastern Ethiopia, roughly 400 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa. Encompassing approximately 2,150 to 2,200 square kilometers across the Bale Massif, the park ranges in elevation from around 1,500 meters to the 4,385-meter summit of Mount Tullu Dimtu. Its diverse landscape spans five distinct ecological habitats, notably featuring the Sanetti Plateau—the largest continuous high-altitude Afroalpine area on the African continent, marked by glacial lakes, volcanic cones, and moorlands. The northern region comprises the Gaysay grasslands and juniper-hagenia woodlands, while the southern slopes drop rapidly into the lush Harenna Forest, Ethiopia's largest cloud forest. The park serves as a critical biodiversity hotspot, hosting a high proportion of endemic plant and animal species. It is the primary global stronghold for the endangered Ethiopian wolf, Africa's rarest canid, which hunts the endemic giant mole-rat across the Sanetti Plateau. Other prominent mammals include the mountain nyala, Bale monkey, Menelik's bushbuck, giant forest hog, Bohor reedbuck, serval, and colobus monkey. Plant life encompasses over 1,300 species of flowering plants, including giant lobelias, everlasting flowers (Helichrysum), and wild forest coffee (Coffea arabica) in the Harenna Forest. In addition, the park shelters more than 280 bird species, including endemics such as the blue-winged goose, spot-breasted lapwing, and yellow-fronted parrot.Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023, Bale Mountains National Park holds significant hydrological importance as the source of major rivers supplying water to more than 12 million people across southern Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia. Visitors explore the park via multi-day trekking routes, mule-back safaris, birdwatching excursions, and driving along the highest all-weather road in Africa, which crosses the Sanetti Plateau towards Mount Tullu Dimtu.
