Awash National Park is located in Ethiopia at the boundary of the Oromia and Afar regions within the Rift Valley, approximately 215 to 225 kilometers east of Addis Ababa. Established in 1966, the park covers an area of roughly 756 to 850 square kilometers of semi-arid terrain with elevations ranging from 700 to 2,007 meters above sea level. Its landscape features Acacia-Commiphora woodlands, dry savanna grasslands, thorn bushlands, and riverine wetlands. Key natural landmarks include Mount Fentale, a stratovolcano reaching 2,007 meters, the Illala Saha Plains, the Kudu Valley, and the Filwoha hot springs surrounded by groves of doum palm trees. The park's southern boundary is formed by the Awash River, which flows through a deep gorge and creates waterfalls near the park headquarters. The park supports rich biodiversity, including more than 81 mammal species, 43 reptile species, and over 400 bird species. It holds the largest protected population of Beisa oryx in Ethiopia. Other resident mammals include Soemmerring's gazelles, lesser and greater kudus, Salt's dik-diks, Defassa waterbucks, warthogs, caracals, servals, spotted hyenas, and lions. Primate species such as olive baboons, hamadryas baboons, grivet monkeys, and guerezas are common near water sources. The Awash River gorge is home to Nile crocodiles, while surrounding scrublands host reptiles including black mambas, puff adders, and leopard tortoises. Avian life includes Somali ostriches, Kori bustards, Abyssinian ground hornbills, carmine bee-eaters, and several endemic species such as the wattled ibis and black-winged lovebird.Awash National Park was established under the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority and represents one of the earliest formal national park initiatives in Ethiopia. The park territory overlaps with the traditional lands of indigenous pastoralist communities, including the Karayyu Oromo, Itu, and Afar peoples. The Addis Ababa–Dire Dawa highway bisects the reserve, separating the southern plains from the northern valley. Visitors explore the area along a network of tracks for wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and visiting the hot springs and river waterfalls.
