Nechisar National Park is a protected area located in the Great Rift Valley of southwestern Ethiopia, approximately 500 kilometers south of Addis Ababa and immediately east of the town of Arba Minch. Established in 1974, the park covers 514 square kilometers of land and water at elevations ranging from 1,108 meters at Lake Chamo to 1,650 meters at Mount Tabala. Its diverse landscape encompasses savannah grasslands, groundwater forests, acacia scrub, and riverine woodlands along the Kulfo and Sermele rivers. The park's central feature is the Nechisar Plain, meaning 'white grass' in Amharic due to the pale hue of Chrysopogon grass during the dry season. The park also encompasses two major Rift Valley lakes, Lake Abaya in the north and Lake Chamo in the south, separated by a mountainous natural isthmus known locally as the 'Bridge of God'.The park protects a wide array of terrestrial and aquatic wildlife. Common mammal species roaming the savannah and bushlands include Burchell's zebra, Grant's gazelle, Guenther's dik-dik, greater kudu, bushbuck, Anubis baboons, vervet monkeys, spotted hyenas, and black-backed jackals. Lake Chamo is renowned for its 'Crocodile Market,' a section of the northwestern shoreline where large aggregations of Nile crocodiles gather alongside hippopotamuses. Nechisar is also an important sanctuary for over 330 recorded bird species, including Great White Pelicans, flamingos, kingfishers, storks, and African fish eagles, as well as rare and endemic species such as the Nechisar nightjar, thick-billed raven, and wattled ibis.Visitors to Nechisar National Park engage in guided boat safaris on Lake Chamo, walking safaris across the plains, game drives, and visits to the natural hot springs near Mount Tabala. The region is also historically connected to indigenous communities such as the Guji Oromo and Ganjule peoples, who traditionally navigated Lake Abaya using high-prowed ambatch boats crafted from lightweight local wood.
