Serengeti National Park is located in northern Tanzania along the border with Kenya, where it connects directly with the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Spanning approximately 14,763 square kilometers (5,700 square miles), the park features diverse landscapes with elevations ranging from 920 to over 2,000 meters. Its terrain is defined by vast open savannah grasslands, acacia woodlands, riverine forests, and isolated granite rock outcroppings known as kopjes. The park is geographically organized into distinct sectors, including the central Seronera Valley, the Western Corridor along the Grumeti River, the Ndutu region in the south, and the northern Mara sector. The park is world-famous as the principal setting for the Great Migration, an annual circular movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and hundreds of thousands of gazelles following seasonal rainfall patterns. Critical phases of this cycle include the mass calving season in the southern plains between January and March and dramatic river crossings at the Grumeti and Mara Rivers between June and October. Beyond the migrating herds, the park maintains exceptionally dense predator populations, hosting over 3,000 lions alongside leopards, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas. Other major wildlife includes African elephants, Cape buffalo, hippos, Nile crocodiles, and more than 500 recorded bird species. The name Serengeti is derived from the Maasai word siringet, meaning endless plains, reflecting the pastoralist heritage of the indigenous Maasai who historically inhabited the area. Established as a national park in 1952, it was later designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its ecological significance and ancient, largely undisturbed migration ecosystem. Managed by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), the park continues to serve as one of Africa's primary wildlife conservation reserves.
