Tarangire National Park is located in the Manyara Region of northern Tanzania, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Arusha. Established in 1970 and managed by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), the park covers an area of approximately 2,850 square kilometers (1,100 square miles). Its landscape comprises granitic ridges, river valleys, seasonal floodplains, and extensive wetlands including the Silale, Gurusi, and Larmakau swamps. Vegetation features a mix of Acacia and Combretum woodlands, open grasslands, and numerous ancient baobab trees. The park takes its name from the Tarangire River, a primary perennial water source that flows northward through the reserve before emptying into Lake Burunge. The park's ecosystem is characterized by a seasonal wildlife migration tied to regional rainfall. During the dry season from June to October, thousands of animals migrate from the surrounding Maasai Steppe and Simanjiro Plains to concentrate along the Tarangire River and its permanent swamps. Tarangire holds the highest concentration of African bush elephants in northern Tanzania, with seasonal herds numbering into the hundreds. Other common wildlife species include plains zebras, blue wildebeests, Cape buffaloes, Masai giraffes, waterbucks, impalas, and elands, along with dry-country specialists such as the fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk. Predators present in the area include lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, caracals, and African wild dogs.Tarangire hosts over 550 recorded bird species across its varied habitats, making it a prominent birdwatching area. Species observed include near-endemics such as the yellow-collared lovebird, rufous-tailed weaver, and ashy starling, as well as Kori bustards, secretary birds, and various raptors and waterbirds. Visitor activities managed within and around the park include day game drives, guided walking safaris escorted by armed rangers, hot air balloon flights, and night game drives in designated concessions.
