Etosha National Park is a major national park and wildlife conservation area located in northwestern Namibia, spanning an area of over 22,000 square kilometers across the Kunene, Oshana, Oshikoto, and Otjozondjupa regions. Originally proclaimed as Game Reserve 2 in March 1907 by Friedrich von Lindequist, the Governor of German South West Africa, the area was formally designated as a national park in 1967. The central feature of the reserve is the Etosha Pan, a massive salt pan covering approximately 4,700 to 5,000 square kilometers that formed after an ancient lake dried up. The name Etosha originates from the Oshindonga language, meaning "great white place" or "the place where no plants grow".The landscape ranges from vast saline clay pans to surrounding mopane shrublands, savanna woodlands, open grasslands, and dolomite hills in the central and western regions. Etosha protects a rich variety of fauna, hosting 114 mammal species, over 400 bird species, 110 reptile species, and seasonal aquatic life. Notable wildlife includes large populations of African bush elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, springbok, gemsbok, blue wildebeest, and black-faced impala, as well as key conservation populations of black and white rhinoceroses. During summer rains, the flooded pan attracts large flocks of flamingos and pelicans alongside resident species such as ostriches, kori bustards, and various birds of prey.Visitors explore the park primarily through game viewing drives, photography, and birdwatching centered around numerous natural and artificial waterholes. Main visitor camps inside the park, including Okaukuejo, Halali, and Namutoni, feature floodlit waterholes that allow for nighttime game viewing of rhinos, elephants, and lions. The park is accessible via several public entry gates, including Anderson's Gate in the south, Von Lindequist Gate in the east, Galton Gate in the west, and King Nehale Lya Mpingana Gate in the north.
