Kilimanjaro National Park is located in northern Tanzania within the Kilimanjaro Region, near the town of Moshi and south of the border with Kenya. Spanning an area of approximately 1,688 square kilometers, the park protects the entire massif of Mount Kilimanjaro above the tree line along with its surrounding montane forest belt. Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant stratovolcano rising 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level, making it the highest peak on the African continent and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. The mountain massif comprises three major volcanic cones: Kibo, which holds the snow-capped summit of Uhuru Peak; Mawenzi at 5,149 meters; and the eroded Shira cone at 4,005 meters. The park features five distinct ecological climate zones that change dramatically with elevation, ranging from cultivated lower slopes and tropical montane rainforest to sub-alpine heath and moorland, alpine desert, and an arctic summit zone of glaciers and ice fields. The lower forest belt shelters a diverse array of wildlife, including blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, leopards, Cape buffaloes, African bush elephants, tree hyraxes, and the endangered Abbott's duiker, as well as over 150 bird species such as the white-necked raven and malachite sunbird.Mountain trekking is the central activity within the park, with hikers ascending the summit via seven officially recognized routes: Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Northern Circuit, Rongai, Umbwe, and Shira. Beyond summit expeditions, visitors can engage in day hikes, nature walks across the Shira Plateau, mountain biking along the Kilema trail, and bird watching. Originally designated as a game reserve during the German colonial era and later established as a forest reserve in 1921, the area was formally declared a national park in 1973 and named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Today, the park is administered by the Tanzania National Parks Authority.
