Bukavu

Bukavu is the capital city of South Kivu Province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,498 meters (4,915 feet) at the southwestern edge of Lake Kivu, the city lies directly west of Cyangugu, Rwanda, separated by the Ruzizi River. Bukavu was originally constructed across five peninsulas along the lakefront and extends into surrounding hills that reach altitudes up to 2,000 meters. The city covers an area of roughly 58 square kilometers and has an urban population estimated at over one million residents.Established in 1901 by the Congo Free State, the area historically formed part of the Bushi Kingdom. Under Belgian colonial rule, the city was named Costermansville in 1927 before reverting to Bukavu in 1953, a name derived from the Mashi phrase meaning farm of cows. The city contains a notable architectural heritage featuring more than 100 colonial-era Art Deco buildings. In recent decades, Bukavu has functioned as a key administrative and trade center in the Great Lakes region, while dealing with rapid population growth and infrastructure strains following regional conflicts.Bukavu serves as the primary gateway to Kahuzi-Biéga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated 31 kilometers to the north that protects the habitat of the endangered eastern lowland gorilla. The city relies heavily on boat transportation across Lake Kivu and links to Lake Tanganyika ports, with air transit provided by Kavumu Airport. Bukavu is also home to major medical and academic institutions such as Panzi Hospital and the Official University of Bukavu, as well as local cultural initiatives including the Festiras peace music festival.
