Opuwo

Opuwo is a town situated in northwestern Namibia, serving as the regional capital, administrative hub, and primary commercial center of the Kunene Region in historic Kaokoland. Located roughly 720 kilometers north-northwest of Windhoek at the junction of the C41 and C43 highways, the town sits within a dry, rugged landscape defined by undulating hills and open savanna. According to the 2023 national census, Opuwo has a population of approximately 12,331 residents.The town is widely recognized as the cultural heartland of the semi-nomadic OvaHimba people, who migrated into northern Namibia alongside the Herero during the 15th and 16th centuries. Opuwo offers a distinct blend of traditional African heritage and modern living. In its local markets and streets, Himba residents wearing traditional goatskin attire, otjize paste, and ornamental jewelry mix seamlessly with inhabitants wearing contemporary Western dress, while donkey carts share the roadways with modern vehicles.Historically, regional governance shifted from Swartbooisdrift on the Kunene River to Ohopoho in 1939, which was later renamed Opuwo in 1974 from an Otjiherero phrase meaning it is enough. Today, Opuwo acts as an essential gateway for travelers journeying to Epupa Falls, Ruacana, and surrounding conservancies. The town is equipped with key infrastructure including Opuwo Airport, a district hospital, government schools, regional administration offices, and hosts the annual Opuwo Trade Fair every May.
