Karongi

Karongi is a district located in the Western Province of Rwanda, with its capital at Rubengera. It is situated on the eastern shores of Lake Kivu, approximately halfway between Gisenyi and Rusizi, and about 100 km from the national capital, Kigali. The district shares borders with Rutsiro and Ngororero to the north, Muhanga and Ruhango to the east, and Nyamagabe and Nyamasheke to the south. To its west, Lake Kivu forms a natural boundary with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Karongi covers an area of approximately 993 square kilometers and, as of the 2022 census, had a population of 373,869, resulting in a population density of 376.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The district experiences a tropical high-altitude climate, characterized by significant rainfall, with annual averages ranging from 1100 to 1500 mm. The topography is marked by highlands, including the Congo-Nil Divide, with altitudes varying between 1470 and 2200 meters.The economy of Karongi is primarily driven by agriculture, livestock farming, and tourism. Key commercial crops cultivated in the region include coffee, tea, and macadamia, while food crops such as maize, sorghum, beans, Irish potatoes, bananas, and various vegetables and fruits are also widely grown. The Gisovu tea from Karongi is particularly renowned for its unique flavor, often ranked among the best globally. Livestock farming involves rearing cows, sheep, goats, pigs, and poultry. Tourism is a vital sector, with Lake Kivu being a major draw. The lake's shores host numerous resorts and hotels, making Karongi a popular lakeside destination.Karongi offers a variety of attractions for visitors. Notable islands on Lake Kivu include Napoleon Island, known for its straw-colored fruit bats and hiking trails, and Monkey Island, home to a small population of vervet monkeys, as well as Amahoro (Peace) Island. Traditional night fishing on Lake Kivu also contributes to the district's unique appeal. Beyond the lake, the district features the Source of the Nile, historical sites like Ibigabiro bya Rwabugiri, the Bisesero Genocide Memorial, and natural wonders such as the Muciro Natural Forest and Ndaba Rock.
