Mityana

Mityana is a district located in the Central Region of Uganda, with its headquarters situated in Mityana Municipality, approximately 73 kilometers west of the capital city, Kampala. The district was established on July 1, 2005, carved out of the former Greater Mubende District. It shares borders with Kiboga, Kyankwanzi, Kasanda, Nakaseke, Wakiso, Mpigi, and Mubende districts. The Mityana Municipality itself was created on July 1, 2015, through a merger of Mityana Town Council and Busimbi Sub County. The district's total land area is approximately 1,579.3 km² (609.8 sq mi), with about 9.49 percent covered by water and wetlands. The municipality covers about 259 sq km, with 208 sq km of land and 52 sq km of water and swamps. The projected population for the district is 400,000, while Mityana town had an estimated population of 105,200 in 2020.The topography of Mityana is characterized by a plateau dissected by valleys, which expand westward into papyrus swamps that drain into Lake Wamala. The area is notably hilly, forming part of the Ssingo hills, with elevations reaching up to 1500 meters. Lake Wamala is a prominent natural feature, with its northern shores lying about 4 kilometers southwest of the town center. The district is home to several Central Forest reserves, including Bulondo, Kajonde, Nkambwe, and Kaweziike, and is rich in diverse wetlands. Mityana experiences a favorable climate due to its high altitude, with medium annual temperatures ranging from 17.2 to 29 degrees Celsius and an average annual rainfall of 99mm, with heavy rains occurring in March, April, November, and September.Agriculture forms the backbone of Mityana's economy, with common crops including sweet potatoes, beans, cassava, maize, bananas, groundnuts, onions, cabbage, and tomatoes. Cash crops like coffee and tea are also cultivated, with large-scale tea estates such as Namutamba Tea Estate and Mwera Tea Estate operating in the district. Culturally, the Baganda are the dominant ethnic group, accounting for 78% of the population, and the majority of residents are either Catholic (47%) or Anglican (44%). Key points of interest within or near the town include St. John the Baptist Cathedral, Mityana Central Market, and Mityana General Hospital.
