Hwange

Hwange, formerly known as Wankie, is a significant town in Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe, serving as the country's primary coal mining hub. It is home to major coal mining operations and the Hwange Thermal Power Station. The town is strategically located along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway, providing direct road and rail links to major urban centers within Zimbabwe and to neighboring countries like Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, and Mozambique. The town is situated close to the entry points of Hwange National Park, specifically Sinamatela and Main Camp, making it a gateway for wildlife enthusiasts. It is also approximately 100 kilometers from the iconic Victoria Falls. The local climate is characterized as Savanna, with erratic rainfall and temperatures that can reach a mean maximum of 40.0ºC in October and drop to a mean minimum of 12ºC in July. Hwange is a place of diverse cultures, where the majority of residents are multilingual, often speaking Nambiya, Nyanja, Tonga, Ndebele, Shona, and English. This cultural richness, combined with its natural endowments and proximity to major natural attractions, defines Hwange as a key location in western Zimbabwe.
