Located in northeastern South Africa across Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, Kruger National Park is one of Africa's largest protected conservation areas, spanning nearly 2 million hectares (approximately 19,485 square kilometers). The park stretches 360 kilometers from north to south along the border with Mozambique and averages 65 kilometers in width. It is bounded by the Limpopo and Luvubu rivers in the north and the Crocodile River in the south, while the Lebombo Mountains line its eastern perimeter. Interior rivers including the Olifants and Letaba traverse the park from west to east, creating distinct ecological divisions. The terrain ranges from flat shrub mopane veld in the north to mixed woodlands, acacia savannas, marula trees, and granite inselbergs reaching elevations up to 840 meters in the southwest.Kruger National Park supports exceptional biodiversity, including 147 mammal species, more than 500 bird species, 114 reptile species, 49 fish species, and 34 amphibian species. It is home to the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, African buffalo, and rhinoceros—alongside cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, hippopotamuses, and an endangered population of African wild dogs. Visitors explore the park via an extensive road network accommodating self-drive game viewing, guided open-vehicle game drives, night safaris, wilderness backpacking trails, and 4x4 eco-trails. Overnight stay options include 12 main public rest camps, such as Skukuza, Satara, and Lower Sabie, as well as smaller bushveld camps and private concession lodges.Conservation efforts in the area began in 1898 with the creation of the Sabi Game Reserve by President Paul Kruger to protect dwindling Lowveld wildlife. In 1926, the Sabi and Shingwedzi reserves were merged under the National Parks Act to formally establish South Africa's first national park. In addition to its natural heritage, the park preserves important archaeological and cultural sites, including ancient San rock art and Iron Age ruins at Masorini and Thulamela that detail centuries of historical human trade and settlement.
