Pilanesberg National Park covers approximately 550 to 572 square kilometres in the Bojanala Region of South Africa's North West Province, situated roughly two to three hours northwest of Johannesburg and adjacent to the Sun City resort complex. Geologically, the park lies within the Pilanesberg Alkaline Ring Complex, an extinct volcanic crater formed roughly 1.2 to 1.3 billion years ago. The terrain is defined by concentric rings of hills and ridges rising 300 to 600 metres above the surrounding bushveld plains. Because the reserve sits in an ecological transition zone between the dry Kalahari and the wet Lowveld, it features diverse vegetation communities, including red bushwillow savanna, sweet thorn valley thickets, and rock outcrop thickets surrounding water sources like Mankwe Dam.Human presence in the region dates back to the Middle Stone Age and Iron Age, with numerous archaeological sites scattered across the area. The park derives its name from Chief Pilane of the Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela tribe, who ruled the region during the 19th century. In 1979, the local authority launched Operation Genesis, one of the largest wildlife translocation and ecological rehabilitation projects in southern Africa. Over 110 kilometres of game fencing was constructed, nearly 200 kilometres of roads were laid, and thousands of animals were reintroduced to restore indigenous wildlife populations that had been depleted by historical farming.Today, Pilanesberg supports more than 7,000 large animals, including all members of Africa's Big Five: African bush elephants, lions, leopards, white and black rhinoceroses, and Cape buffaloes. Other resident species include cheetahs, hippopotamuses, giraffes, plains zebras, waterbuck, sable antelopes, and brown hyenas, alongside over 360 recorded bird species. Visitors can navigate the park via self-drive or guided safari routes, utilize concealed photographic bird hides near waterholes, participate in walking safaris, or observe the landscape via hot air balloon flights.
