Lake Nakuru National Park is situated in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, approximately 156 kilometers northwest of Nairobi and directly south of Nakuru City. Spanning 188 square kilometers at an elevation of roughly 1,754 meters above sea level, the park is fully enclosed by an electric perimeter fence constructed in 1986 to deter poaching and prevent human-wildlife conflict. Conservation initiatives began in 1961 when the southern section of Lake Nakuru was declared a bird sanctuary. The site was gazetted as a national park in 1968 and expanded in 1974 with support from the World Wide Fund for Nature. In 1987, it became Kenya's first official government-managed rhino sanctuary. The area is recognized internationally as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley. The park encompasses a diverse set of ecosystems centered around Lake Nakuru, a shallow, semi-alkaline soda lake fed by rivers such as the Njoro, Makalia, and Enderit. Terrain across the park includes open savannah grasslands, yellow-barked fever tree woodlands, euphorbia forests, steep rocky escarpments, and hill ridges. Key geographic features include Baboon Cliff, Out of Africa Lookout, Lion Hill, and the seasonal Makalia Waterfalls in the southern sector. Lake water levels vary over time due to climate and hydrological shifts, with surface area expanding from roughly 40 to 68 square kilometers in recent years, altering shoreline habitats.Lake Nakuru National Park supports high wildlife density, including over 450 bird species and more than 50 mammal species. The lake attracts waterbirds such as lesser and greater flamingos, pelicans, cormorants, and African fish eagles. On land, the park serves as a sanctuary for endangered black and white rhinoceroses, as well as Rothschild's giraffes re-established here in 1977. Other resident species include Cape buffaloes, waterbucks, lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, olive baboons, and pythons. Visitor activities center on game drives, birdwatching, and photography, accessed via Main Gate, Lanet Gate, Nderit Gate, or Naishi Airstrip.
