Northern Serengeti National Park is a significant section of the larger Serengeti National Park, located in northern Tanzania and extending to the Kenyan border, where it is continuous with the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The entire Serengeti National Park spans approximately 14,763 square kilometers (5,700 sq mi). This northern region is characterized by its landscape of open woodlands, predominantly Commiphora trees, and rolling hills. It is generally considered a more remote and less-traveled area compared to other parts of the park. A key geographical feature is the Mara River, the only permanently-flowing river in the Serengeti ecosystem, which traverses this northern section. The Lobo area is also part of the Northern Serengeti. The Northern Serengeti is particularly renowned for its role in the Great Migration, one of the world's most spectacular wildlife events. From July to October, this area witnesses the dramatic Mara River crossings, as vast herds of wildebeest and zebra move through in search of fresh grazing. Beyond the migration, the region supports a rich diversity of resident wildlife, including lions, leopards, and occasionally black rhinos. Other common sightings include elephants, buffalo, and various antelope species. Activities available to visitors typically include game drives in open 4x4 vehicles and seasonal guided nature walks, offering intimate encounters with the wilderness. The Serengeti National Park, including its northern reaches, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its outstanding universal value and ecological significance. The name "Serengeti" itself is derived from the Maasai word "Siringit," meaning "the place where the land runs on forever" or "endless plains," a fitting description for the vast savannahs found here. The Northern Serengeti offers a more exclusive and less crowded safari experience, especially during the migration season, allowing for a deeper connection with the natural environment.
