Majete Wildlife Reserve

Majete Wildlife Reserve is a significant conservation success story located in southwestern Malawi, approximately 1.5 hours drive from Blantyre. Covering an expansive area of 700 square kilometers (70,000 hectares), it forms a vital part of Africa's Great Rift Valley. The reserve's diverse landscape features undulating hills, vast grassy plains, and mixed woodlands punctuated by distinctive star chestnut and mahogany trees. The mighty Shire River, which flows through the reserve, is a central feature, cutting through the terrain and cascading over the impressive Kapichira Falls. Majete Hill, the highest point, offers panoramic views of the entire reserve.Once severely depleted by poaching in the late 1970s and 1980s, Majete has undergone a remarkable transformation since African Parks assumed management in partnership with the Malawi Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) in 2003. This extensive restoration project included significant infrastructure development, such as a 142-kilometer electrified perimeter fence and 300 kilometers of roads, alongside a comprehensive wildlife restocking program. As a result, Majete is now Malawi's only official Big Five reserve, home to thriving populations of elephant, lion, leopard, black rhino, and buffalo. Beyond the Big Five, the reserve boasts a rich array of other mammals, including giraffe, African wild dog, sable antelope, kudu, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, elands, nyalas, zebras, hippos, cheetah, and serval. Birdlife is equally abundant, with over 300 species recorded, attracting birders with sightings of African pitta, racket-tailed roller, and bateleur eagles.Visitors to Majete can engage in a variety of safari activities designed to showcase its natural beauty and wildlife. These include self-drive or guided game drives, walking safaris, and unique boating safaris on the Shire River. For a more immersive experience, bush camping and sleep-outs at the Nakamba Hide are available. The reserve also offers community visits, specialized birding experiences, and facilities like the Mwembezi Restaurant and Heritage pool. Accommodation options within the reserve range from campsites and bush camps to lodges such as Thawale Lodge and the luxurious Mkulumadzi Lodge, catering to different preferences while contributing directly to the reserve's long-term sustainability and community support.
