Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth, officially known as Gqeberha since 2021, is a major seaport and the most populous city in South Africa's Eastern Cape province. Located on the south-eastern coast, approximately 763 km east of Cape Town, it sits on the western portion of Algoa Bay, facing the Indian Ocean. The city, often referred to as "The Friendly City" or "The Windy City," is the seat of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, which also encompasses the towns of Kariega (formerly Uitenhage), Despatch, and Colchester. The urban area covers about 251 square kilometers and is characterized by a landscape that rises from the coast to a 60-90 meter plateau, traversed by the small Baakens River.The region boasts a diverse natural environment, representing five of South Africa's seven terrestrial biomes, including Thicket, Grassland, Nama-Karoo, Fynbos, and Forest. Algoa Bay features 40 km of magnificent coastline with warm waters and protected beaches, such as Kings Beach, Hobie Beach, and Sardinia Bay. It is renowned as the "Bottlenose Dolphin Capital of the World" and hosts the largest breeding colony of the African Penguin. The area offers exceptional wildlife viewing, being the only city within South Africa to boast the "Big 7" (Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino, Lion, Leopard, Southern right whale, and Great White Shark) within its municipal boundaries, with malaria-free game reserves like Addo Elephant National Park easily accessible. Water sports are a major draw, with world-class conditions for sailing, wind-surfing, scuba diving, and fishing.Historically, Port Elizabeth was founded in 1820 by Sir Rufane Donkin, acting Governor of the Cape Colony, and named after his late wife, Elizabeth. It served as a British settlement to secure the border region against the Xhosa people. The city's rich cultural heritage is evident in its architecture, showcasing Victorian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Cape Dutch styles. The Donkin Heritage Trail guides visitors through historic sites, including the Donkin Reserve, which features a pyramid of remembrance and a Nelson Mandela Voting Line Sculpture.
