Nelspruit

Nelspruit, officially known as Mbombela, is the capital city of Mpumalanga Province in eastern South Africa. Situated in the fertile valley of the Crocodile River, among domed granite hills, it serves as a crucial gateway to the Lowveld, the Kruger National Park, and the Mozambique Corridor. The city is approximately 330 km east of Johannesburg, 110 km west of the Mozambique border, and 82 km north of the Eswatini border. Its subtropical climate, characterized by abundant sunshine and lush landscapes, makes it a preferred tourist destination year-round. The name "Mbombela" means "many people together in a small space" in Siswati, reflecting its growth from a rural town to a bustling urban center.Mbombela is a significant agricultural processing hub, renowned for its production of subtropical fruits such as mangoes, avocados, oranges, lemons, litchis, bananas, macadamia, and pecan nuts. The economy also relies heavily on the forestry sector, with a paper mill nearby and various timber-related industries. As the financial and banking capital of Mpumalanga, the city boasts world-class shopping malls, casinos, and entertainment venues, attracting both local residents and tourists from neighboring Mozambique and Eswatini. The city is well-connected by the N4 toll route, part of the Maputo Corridor, and is served by the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMI Airport), located about 27 km northeast, offering flights to various destinations.Tourism is a major draw, with Mbombela acting as a primary stopover for visitors heading to the internationally acclaimed Kruger National Park. Within and around the city, attractions include the Lowveld National Botanical Garden, a 154-hectare site featuring around 500 indigenous plant species and the first man-made rainforest, where the Crocodile River meets the Nels River. Other notable sites are the ancient Sudwala Caves, considered the oldest known caves in the world, and the adjacent Dinosaur Park and Cultural Centre. The Mbombela Stadium, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, hosts major sports and entertainment events. The surrounding mountains offer fantastic hiking trails, including those in the Nelspruit Nature Reserve.
