Dorob National Park, proclaimed in 2010, is a significant protected area situated along the central Namibian coast in the Erongo region. It encompasses the central Namib desert, stretching approximately 1,600 kilometers (990 miles) in length. The park extends from the Kuiseb Delta in the south to the Ugab River in the north, and from the Atlantic Ocean westward to what was formerly the National West Coast Tourist Recreation Area. It serves as a crucial link between the Skeleton Coast National Park to its north and the Namib-Naukluft Park to its south. Within its boundaries are the towns of Henties Bay and Swakopmund, as well as the hamlet of Wlotzkasbaken. The Omaruru River bisects the park, while the Swakop River lies just south of its border. The park's size is stated as 7,800 km², and when combined with Namib-Naukluft Park, it covers a vast area of 107,540 square kilometers. The park's diverse terrain includes the Atlantic coastline, expansive gravel plains, and sandy beaches punctuated by dune hummocks. It boasts a spectacular coastal dune belt and major ephemeral river systems with their river mouths. A notable feature is the extensive lichen fields found north of Wlotzkasbaken and Cape Cross. The Messum Crater, located in the northern part of the park, holds historical and cultural significance with its San rock paintings and archaeological sites left by Damara nomads. This hyper-arid desert environment, where the desert meets the ocean, creates a unique ecosystem.Dorob National Park is a haven for wildlife, particularly birds, making it Namibia's richest coastal area for avian species. Approximately 270 bird species have been recorded here, including the endemic Damara Tern, Ludwig's Bustard, Rüppell's Korhaan, African Black Oystercatcher, and Gray's Lark, with nearly 1.6 million birds observed along the coast. Terrestrial wildlife includes springbok, oryx, zebra, black-backed jackal, and brown hyaena. The coastal sections are also home to large colonies of Cape fur seals.Tourism in Dorob National Park focuses on conservation-conscious activities. It is renowned as an angler's paradise, offering opportunities to catch kabeljou, galjoen, and steenbras. Visitors can enjoy camping at designated sites such as Mile 14, Jakkalsputz, Mile 72, and Mile 108. The park also offers walking trails, including an 18 km route at Jakkalsputz and longer 20 km and 70 km trails along the Omaruru River. For the more adventurous, activities like 4x4 trails, quad biking, and sandboarding on the dunes are available in specific areas.
