Island of Mozambique

The Island of Mozambique (Ilha de Moçambique) is a small coral island situated off the northern coast of Mozambique, between the Mozambique Channel and Mossuril Bay, forming part of Nampula Province. It is connected to the mainland town of Lumbo by a 3 km bridge, constructed in the 1960s. The island itself measures approximately 3 km in length and between 200 and 500 meters in width.This historic island holds immense cultural significance, having served as the capital of colonial Portuguese East Africa until 1898. Its name is derived from Ali Musa Mbiki (Mussa Bin Bique), the sultan during Vasco da Gama's arrival. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the island showcases a unique fusion of African, Arab, and European influences in its architecture and vibrant culture. Notable historical landmarks include Fort São Sebastião, a 16th-century European-built fort, and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte, dating back to 1522 and considered one of the oldest European structures in the Southern Hemisphere. The Palácio de São Paulo, formerly the colonial governor's residence, now operates as a museum, preserving the island's rich past. The presence of mosques and a Hindu temple further highlights its diverse heritage.The island's landscape is characterized by its coral-stone streets, particularly in Stone Town at the northern end, where most historical buildings are located. The southern part, Makuti Town, is home to the majority of residents living in traditional reed houses. The surrounding marine environment is teeming with life, offering opportunities for snorkeling among colorful reef fish, and observing dolphins and seasonal whales. Popular activities include exploring the historical sites, guided tours through Makuti Town, enjoying local seafood, and dhow trips. The dry season, from May to November, is considered the ideal time to visit, offering clear, warm days with low humidity, perfect for combining an island visit with a safari.
