Rundu

Rundu is the capital and largest city of the Kavango-East Region in northern Namibia, located on the southern bank of the Kavango River, which forms a natural border with Angola. Situated approximately 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) above sea level, the city is a significant administrative and economic hub for the region. It lies about 800 kilometers northeast of Namibia's capital, Windhoek, making it a crucial stopover point for travelers heading to or from the Caprivi Strip (now Zambezi Region) and other national parks. The city has experienced rapid population growth, with the 2023 census recording 118,632 inhabitants within its 156 square kilometer area.The surrounding Kavango region is characterized by a generally flat terrain, receiving an average annual rainfall of 500 to 600 mm (20 to 24 inches). The landscape transitions from patches of tall grass and bush scrub to forests of Rhodesian teak, mahogany, and mopane in the eastern parts. The Kavango River itself is a vital natural feature, offering opportunities for bird watching, fishing, and boat tours, where visitors might spot hippos and crocodiles. Rundu serves as a gateway to several prominent wildlife areas, including Bwabwata National Park, Mahangu Game Reserve, Mudumu, and Nkasa Rupara National Park, which are home to diverse big-game species such as elephants, buffalo, roan antelope, and impala.Culturally, Rundu is renowned for its vibrant wood carving industry, with a prominent woodcarver's market where visitors can observe artisans at work and purchase intricate wooden items. The Mbunza Living Museum provides an immersive experience into the traditional lifestyle and customs of the local Mbunza people. The city also hosts cultural festivals and offers local restaurants serving traditional African cuisine, including dishes made from mahangu, ground nuts, stewed meats, and fish from the Okavango River. Historically, Rundu became the administrative seat of the Kavango district in 1936.
