Mount Longonot National Park is a prominent stratovolcano located in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, approximately 90 km northwest of Nairobi. Its name, derived from the Maasai word "Oloonong'ot," signifies "mountains of many spurs" or "steep ridges," accurately reflecting its rugged terrain. The park, gazetted in 1983 by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), encompasses an area of approximately 52 square kilometers and is dedicated to preserving its dramatic volcanic landscape and unique ecological features. The volcano last erupted in the 1860s, leaving behind a distinctive 1.8 km wide crater and a large 8 x 12 km caldera formed by earlier eruptions around 21,000 years ago.The park is a popular destination for adventure and outdoor wellness experiences, primarily known for its challenging yet rewarding hiking trails. A 3.1 km trail leads from the park entrance to the crater rim, and a further 7.2 km loop encircles the crater, offering panoramic views of the Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha, and surrounding peaks. The total hike, including the rim loop, typically takes 4-5 hours. The crater floor itself is covered by a dense forest of small trees, and small steam vents can be found along the crater walls. Basic camping facilities are available near the park gate.Mount Longonot is home to diverse wildlife, including plains zebra, giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, baboons, antelopes, and various bird species such as Augur buzzards and eagles. While leopards have been reported, they are rarely sighted. The park is accessible year-round, with optimal hiking conditions during the dry seasons from January to March and June to October. Visitors are advised to carry sufficient water, snacks, and appropriate hiking gear, and to adhere to park rules, including maintaining a safe distance from wildlife and observing speed limits.
