Loiyangalani

Loiyangalani is a small town situated on the southeastern coast of Lake Turkana in Northern Kenya, within Marsabit County. Its name, meaning "a place of many trees" in the Samburu language, hints at its origin around a vital freshwater spring, which serves as an oasis in the surrounding semi-arid desert. The town was founded in the 1960s and has grown to a population of 5,117 as of 2009. It is a melting pot of cultures, home to indigenous communities such as the Rendille, El Molo (one of Kenya's smallest and most endangered groups), Turkana, Samburu, Gabra, Watta, Borana, and Dassanach, alongside other Kenyan communities like the Luo, Meru, and Somali.The landscape around Loiyangalani is characterized by barren, volcanic rock terrain and an extremely hot, dry desert climate. Despite its remoteness, it is a popular tourist destination, primarily due to its proximity to Lake Turkana, the world's largest permanent desert lake and largest alkaline lake, which is known to be crocodile-infested. The area offers unique cultural experiences through its diverse villages. Main industries include fishing, tourism, and gold panning. The town also features an airstrip and is located about 50 km from Mount Kulal, known for its forest and unique stones. The Loiyangalani Desert Museum, established by the National Museums of Kenya, serves as a cultural anchor, preserving and promoting the heritage of the eight ethnic communities. The town gained international recognition as the setting for John le Carré's novel "The Constant Gardener" and its subsequent film adaptation.
