Marsabit National Park is a unique montane oasis located in northern Kenya, approximately 570 km north of Nairobi. Rising dramatically from an arid landscape, the park is crowned by dense forests and three volcanic crater lakes, locally known as "gofs," which serve as the only permanent surface water sources in the region. The park covers an area of 1,554 square kilometers. The extinct volcano at its center creates a distinct microclimate, supporting a vast indigenous forest sustained by thick mists that form overnight and often linger until late morning. This cool, forested highland offers breathtaking scenery, misty views, and a tranquil environment ideal for adventure, wellness, and reflection in nature. The park is renowned as a vital refuge for magnificent, large-tusked bull elephants, famously linked to the legendary elephant Ahmed, who received 24-hour presidential protection in the 1970s to highlight Kenya's commitment to wildlife conservation. Beyond elephants, Marsabit National Park supports a diverse array of wildlife, including the endangered Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, greater and lesser kudu, lion, leopard, buffalo, bushbuck, and various other antelopes. The dense forest, however, can make game viewing challenging but rewarding for patient visitors. The park is also a birdwatcher's paradise, home to over 350 species of birds, including 52 birds of prey, with Lake Paradise being a notable spot for waterfowl and rare species like the Lammergeyer Vulture.Key attractions within the park include the extinct volcanic craters, particularly Gof Sokorte Guda, which cradles Lake Paradise—a scenic crater lake popular for filming and birdlife. Visitors can engage in game drives, camel safaris, and hiking through the mist-wreathed montane forest. Cultural experiences are also available, such as visits to traditional singing wells and the Marsabit Cultural Museum, which preserves the history and traditions of 14 indigenous communities. Accommodation options range from KWS public campsites (Ahmed, Abdul, Lake Paradise) and Mbugani Homes (Sokorte Cabin, Bonkole Forest House) to privately owned hotels in Marsabit town. The park is accessible by road from Nairobi (570 km via Nanyuki and Isiolo) and by air, with an airstrip located near Marsabit town.
