Sedgefield

Sedgefield is a coastal town located on South Africa's renowned Garden Route in the Western Cape province, nestled between the better-known towns of Wilderness and Knysna. It is situated on the N2 national road, approximately 490 km from Cape Town. The town is almost entirely surrounded by water, bordering the Swartvlei Estuary, the Indian Ocean, and the Goukamma Nature Reserve. Sedgefield earned the distinction of being the first "Slow Town" in Africa in October 2010, a status granted by the Italian Organisation, CittaSlow, which aligns with the vision for the Garden Route National Park. This ethos promotes a relaxed pace of life and a deep connection with nature and community.The area is a nature lover's paradise, characterized by spectacular unspoiled beaches, pristine lakes, and a rich biodiversity. The Swartvlei Lake system, the largest and deepest lake in the Western Cape, embraces the town and is periodically open to the sea, supporting hundreds of bird species, making it a favored destination for birdwatchers. The coastline features five extensive beaches, including Platbank and Gericke's Point, the latter known for its dramatic tidal pools, fascinating rock formations, and unique nocturnal Moonlight Meander tours. The Goukamma Nature Reserve and Marine Protected Area, a World Heritage Site, encompasses the freshwater Groenvlei Lake, coastal forest, fynbos, and fossilized dunes, offering numerous hiking trails and opportunities to spot wildlife like the Knysna turaco and African clawless otter. Sedgefield is also an internationally recognized paragliding hotspot, with Cloud 9 being one of the best sites on the Garden Route.Historically, the town was proclaimed in 1929 on the farm Sedgefield, named in 1894 after the English village where Henry Barrington, father of the then-farm owner, was born. The name "Sedgefield" was chosen for its good translation to the original Afrikaans name "Ruigtevlei" and its descriptive nature of the environment. The town experienced growth as a "new winter resort" from the 1920s, with infrastructure like a railway connection (1928) and a completed road (1947) integrating it into the commercial route between George and Knysna. Sedgefield is also known as the "Mosaic Capital of the Garden Route," with colorful mosaic benches and artworks adorning the town, a result of a community upliftment project. The vibrant Saturday markets, including Wild Oats, Mosaic, and Scarab Markets, are popular attractions, bringing together locals and visitors to enjoy local food, arts, and crafts.
