Solio Ranch

Solio Ranch, also known as Solio Game Reserve, is a privately owned wildlife conservancy located in Kenya's Central Province. Situated approximately 180 kilometers (110 miles) north of Nairobi, it lies in a valley between the majestic Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains, about 22-24 kilometers north of Nyeri Town. The conservancy spans around 7,100 hectares (17,500 acres), while the entire Solio Ranch encompasses approximately 45,000 acres (70 square miles). The terrain is characterized by expansive grasslands, with the Moyo River's banks, lined with yellow fever trees, offering vital vegetation and refuge for a diverse array of wildlife. The conservancy provides breathtaking views of both Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains.Internationally acclaimed as the world's first private rhino sanctuary, Solio Ranch is a cornerstone of rhino conservation efforts in East Africa. It is particularly vital for the protection and breeding of black rhinos and also supports a significant population of white rhinos. Visitors frequently witness large groups, with sightings of up to 40 rhinoceros at a time being common. Beyond its renowned rhino populations, Solio Ranch is home to four of the "Big Five" – buffalo, lion, leopard, and rhino – with elephants being intentionally absent. Other abundant wildlife includes zebra, giraffe, and various plains game such as eland, oryx, impala, waterbuck, Thompson's gazelle, and warthog. The conservancy is also celebrated for offering some of the best leopard viewing opportunities in Kenya, alongside sightings of lions and cheetahs. Bird enthusiasts can delight in over 350 recorded species, including European rollers, flycatchers, vultures, eagle owls, Montagu's Harriers, long-crested eagles, buzzards, crowned cranes, and European storks.Activities available at Solio Ranch cater to a range of interests, including exhilarating day and night game drives conducted in 4x4 safari vehicles. For those preferring a closer encounter with nature, guided walking safaris are offered just outside the main rhino sanctuary. Adventurous visitors can also explore the conservancy on horseback or by mountain bike. Additional experiences in the vicinity include trout fishing in the nearby Aberdare National Park and scenic helicopter rides to Mount Kenya for a unique picnic breakfast.The history of Solio Ranch is deeply intertwined with conservation. It was established in 1970 by Courtland Parfet, who transformed a large section of his cattle ranch into a dedicated wildlife sanctuary. This pioneering initiative was a direct response to the severe decline in black rhino populations caused by rampant poaching during the 1970s and 1980s. Solio's highly successful breeding program has since provided rhinos to re-stock numerous game reserves across Africa, including prominent locations like Nakuru National Park, Sweetwaters Game Reserve, Lewa Downs Conservancy, and Ol Jogi. In 2007, a significant portion of the original Solio Ranch was acquired by the Kenyan government for a settlement scheme, leading to the relocation of thousands of squatters and the translocation of wildlife from that area to other protected conservancies.
