Huye

Huye, also widely known by its former name Butare, is a city located in the Southern Province of Rwanda, serving as the capital of the Huye district. Situated at coordinates approximately -2.60775, 29.73681, the city had a population of 62,823 as of the 2022 census. Its history dates back to the 1920s when it was established by Belgian colonial rulers and named Astrida, in honor of Queen Astrid of the Belgians. Following Rwanda's independence in 1962, the city was renamed Butare, and while it is now officially called Huye, the name Butare remains commonly used among Rwandans. The city has long been recognized as an intellectual hub, a status it maintains today, housing the University of Rwanda's Huye Campus, which was formerly the National University of Rwanda established in 1963. It also hosts the National Institute of Scientific Research and various other educational institutions, with studies ranging from traditional medicine combined with modern science to food and agriculture.Huye offers several points of cultural and historical interest. The Ethnographic Museum, previously known as the National Museum, is a significant attraction, boasting one of Africa's finest ethnographic collections that provides deep insights into Rwanda's pre-colonial era and its journey to modernity. Nearby, visitors can explore the King's Palace Museum in Nyanza, which brings ancient traditions to life with a replica royal hut and sacred Inyambo (Ankole) cows. The city is also home to a large cathedral, built in 1930, and is a center for various Christian denominations and Muslim communities. For nature enthusiasts, an arboretum established in 1933 on Ruhande Hill serves as a 200-hectare research forest and a vital gene bank for Rwandan forests, recently dedicated to the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy project.
