Dinokeng Game Reserve, located in Gauteng, South Africa, is the province's only Big 5 game reserve, offering an extraordinary wildlife experience just 40 minutes from Pretoria. Established as part of the Gauteng government's "Blue IQ" project, the reserve officially opened on September 22, 2011, with the aim of promoting ecotourism and socio-economic development through a public-private partnership with local landowners. Covering an area of approximately 21,000 hectares, its name, meaning "a place of rivers" in the languages of the baTswana and baPedi people, reflects the Pienaars River as its main watercourse. The reserve is malaria-free and experiences summer rainfall with mild winters. The reserve is home to the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino), which were gradually reintroduced, with black rhinoceros completing the Big 5 in 2018. Beyond these iconic animals, visitors can spot cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, brown hyenas, wildebeests, hippopotamuses, and crocodiles. It is also a haven for birdwatchers, boasting over 300 species, including martial eagles and the endangered blue crane. Dinokeng Game Reserve is committed to conservation, participating in projects like the EWT Cheetah Metapopulation project to prevent inbreeding and ensure the long-term viability of cheetahs in smaller, fenced reserves.Visitors to Dinokeng can explore the reserve through various activities, including over 140 kilometers of self-drive routes, guided game drives, and bush walks. There are also several picnic sites, bird hides, and restaurants available. The reserve offers a diverse range of accommodation options, from luxury lodges to self-catering chalets and campsites. Conservation events, such as rhino collaring, provide unique opportunities for public involvement. The reserve serves as a model for how people and wild animals can coexist in harmony within a metropolitan area.
