Sagana

Sagana is a historic industrial town located in Kirinyaga County, Kenya, approximately 100 kilometers north of Nairobi along the Nairobi-Nyeri highway. Situated at the southern foot of Mount Kenya and nestled along the banks of the Sagana River, also known as Thagana, the town's coordinates are approximately -0.650°S, 37.200°E. It covers an area of about 37 square kilometers (14 sq mi) and has an elevation of 2,161 meters (7,090 ft). The climate features two distinct rainy seasons and dry periods, with average annual rainfall of 1,166 mm and daily temperatures ranging from 17 to 23 °C. The topography is characterized by soils formed on volcanic rocks from Mount Kenya, including lateritic, red, and reddish-brown soils on slopes, and black cotton soils in areas with restricted drainage.Historically, Sagana began around 1922 and became a significant industrial hub in the 1970s and 1980s, known for coffee, leather, fish, flour milling, oil depots, and timber yards. It was home to the only train sub-station in the Mount Kenya region, which was crucial for the Nairobi-Nanyuki railway line, and was also a vibrant center for entertainment. The town's economy thrived, attracting a large workforce and inspiring the rhumba song “Afro Mtoto wa Sagana.” However, the decline of the railway transport network in the 1980s led to a gradual economic downturn.Today, Sagana is undergoing a revitalization effort, with the Kirinyaga County Government establishing an industrial park to attract investors in agro-processing and supportive industries, aiming to create over 10,000 direct jobs. The town boasts existing infrastructure, including a railway line, a dual-carriage road, and water resources, with streets recently cabro-paved. The Sagana River is a central feature, offering a growing hospitality industry and a range of water sports and tourist attractions. Visitors can enjoy white-water rafting, hiking, nature walks, fishing, picnicking, bike riding, bungee jumping, and ziplining. The area is also rich in diverse wildlife and bird species.
