Matjiesfontein

Matjiesfontein is a unique Victorian village nestled in the Central Karoo District Municipality of South Africa's Western Cape province. Situated approximately 240 km from Cape Town, it lies on the N1 national route, 27 km west of Laingsburg and 54 km east of Touwsrivier. The surrounding Karoo landscape is characterized by flat, sparsely populated semi-desert, experiencing hot, dry summers and cold, sometimes icy, winters. The village itself, remarkably preserved, was declared a National Monument (National Heritage Site) in its entirety in 1975, a testament to its historical significance and architectural integrity.The village was established in 1884 by James Douglas Logan, a Scottish railway official who settled in the area for health reasons. He developed a refreshment station for the Cape Government Railways, which quickly grew into a thriving settlement. Matjiesfontein flourished as a fashionable Victorian health spa, attracting visitors from across the globe. Its historical importance deepened during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), when it served as the headquarters for the Cape Command and housed 12,000 British troops, with the iconic Lord Milner Hotel functioning as a military hospital. Notable figures like writer Olive Schreiner also resided here.Today, Matjiesfontein offers a step back in time with its array of historic buildings, including the Lord Milner Hotel, the old courthouse, a Cape Gothic church, and the original railway station. Visitors can explore two museums, including the Marie Rawdon Museum, which is recognized as the largest private museum in South Africa. A popular activity is the humorous and informative London Double Decker Bus tour, often cited as the shortest tour in the country. The village also provides opportunities for veld walks, hikes, mountain biking, and visiting the Boer War British Army remount encampment site and a historic cricket pitch. In a blend of old and new, Matjiesfontein is also becoming a site for cutting-edge technology, with a new ground station for NASA's lunar exploration program under construction, set to open in 2025. This facility, part of the Lunar Exploration Ground Segment (LEGS) network, is expected to include a visitors' centre, adding another dimension to the village's attractions.
