Sumbawanga is a city located in western Tanzania, serving as the capital of the Rukwa Region and the municipal seat of Sumbawanga Urban District. Situated in Tanzania's southwestern corner, the city had a population of approximately 303,986 residents as of the 2022 census. The area is characterized by lush hills and is in proximity to the stunning shores of Lake Tanganyika and Lake Rukwa. The local economy is primarily driven by agriculture and small, locally-owned businesses. The name "Sumbawanga" translates to "throw away your witchcraft" in Kiswahili, a reference to its historical association with spiritual healers, a belief that some residents in a 2013 article expressed a desire to move past.The city offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural experiences.
