Malelane

Malelane is a small farming town located in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa, situated on the N4 national highway. It serves as a crucial gateway to the renowned Kruger National Park, as well as to the neighboring countries of Mozambique and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), with both borders approximately 43 kilometers away. The town lies in a low-lying area with a hot climate, characterized by lush, tropical scenery, including the impressive Komati Gorge. The Crocodile River, a vital water source, flows through the region, contributing to its fertile landscape. The Driekoppies Dam, completed in 2002, is a popular spot for fishing, particularly for largemouth bass, and offers opportunities for spotting big game nearby. The surrounding terrain features granite koppies adorned with various indigenous trees like large-leaved rock figs, bushwillows, jackal-berries, magic guarries, and tambotis.Proclaimed in 1949, Malelane's name is believed to be a corrupted form of the Swazi expression "eMlalani" or "emlalani," meaning "place of the palms" or "Land of Lala Palms". Historically, it was a significant rest-stop during the gold rush and trading era for travelers between Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) and Johannesburg/Pretoria. The town's economy is primarily driven by agriculture, with extensive sugarcane plantations, subtropical fruit, and winter vegetables being key products. The establishment of a sugar mill for Transvaal Suiker Beperk (TSB) was a major economic catalyst, leading to further development and job creation.Malelane offers various activities and amenities for residents and visitors. Its close proximity to the Malelane Gate of Kruger National Park makes it an ideal base for game drives and walks, and the diverse flora attracts bird enthusiasts. The prestigious Leopard Creek Golf Course, known for its innovative design and natural protection from wildlife, allows golfers to potentially spot hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and buck. The town also features the Inkwazi Shopping Centre for supplies and a local golf course. An airport was constructed in 1991, further enhancing its accessibility. In 2007, the official name of the town was changed from Malelane to Malalane by the South African Geographical Names Council, although both spellings are still commonly encountered.
