Kabarnet

Kabarnet is a town and municipality situated in Baringo County, Kenya, serving as the administrative headquarters for the county since 1907. Located on the eastern edge of the Kerio Valley, the town sits at an altitude of 1,815 meters (5,957 feet). As of the 2019 census, Kabarnet had a population of 22,474 residents. It is approximately 138 km north of Nakuru and 89 km east of Eldoret. The town offers breathtaking views of the Tugen Hills, and panoramic vistas extending eastward over the Rift Valley towards Lake Baringo and Lake Bogoria, and westward to the Elgeyo escarpment and the Kerio Valley. The local community primarily consists of the Samors, a sub-group of the Tugen people. The name "Kabarnet" originates from "Barnett's home," honoring Albert Edmund Barnett, an Australian missionary who arrived in the region in 1908.Kabarnet is well-equipped with various educational and health facilities, including kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, polytechnics, the Kenya School of Government, and the Kenya Medical Training College. The Kabarnet District Hospital provides essential health services. The town holds historical significance as the hometown of Kenya's former President, Daniel arap Moi. Economically, the surrounding Baringo County is largely agro-based, cultivating crops like maize, pigeon peas, and coffee, and producing livestock products such as honey and beef.Cultural and natural attractions abound in and around Kabarnet. The Kabarnet Museum, housed in the former District Commissioner's residence, showcases local culture, traditions, and information about Lake Baringo and its environment, with lush gardens forming a small botanical park. Nearby natural wonders include the Tugen Hills, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Lake Bogoria National Reserve—famous for its geysers and large flamingo populations—and Lake Baringo, an Important Bird Area teeming with diverse wildlife. The Kerio Valley, with its dramatic Cheploch Gorge and Torok waterfalls, also offers scenic beauty and adventure. Kabarnet has maintained a twinning relationship with Hürth, Germany, since 1988, fostering active cultural exchanges.
