Kapsabet

Kapsabet is a town in Kenya, serving as the capital of Nandi County. It is situated approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Eldoret, with coordinates 0°20′N 35°10′E. The name Kapsabet is derived from the Nandi words "Kap" (belong to/area of) and "sabit" or "sobet" (live), translating to "a place of life". As of the 2009 census, the municipality had a total population of 86,803, predominantly composed of the Nandi section of the Kalenjin ethnic group, alongside significant numbers of Maragoli, Tiriki (Luhya subtribes), Gusii, Somali, Indians, and Luos. The town is largely Christian, with various churches, but also hosts thriving Muslim and Hindu communities.The economy of Kapsabet is primarily agricultural, characterized by extensive tea and maize farms, as well as horticulture and dairy operations. Key industrial facilities include a milk depot operated by New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (New KCC) and the KTDA Chebut Tea Factory. The town has experienced substantial real estate development, particularly since devolution, attracting numerous financial institutions and retail stores. Kapsabet is also a notable educational hub, home to institutions like Kapsabet High School, Kapsabet Girls High School, and the University of Eastern Africa Baraton.Beyond its economic and educational significance, Kapsabet is renowned as a breeding ground for world-class long-distance runners, with many successful athletes hailing from or near the town, including Rodgers Rop, Bernard Lagat, and Pamela Jelimo.
