Kokstad

Kokstad is a local municipality situated in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa, within the Harry Gwala District Municipality. It is strategically located along the western border of the district, covering an area of approximately 2,680 km². The town is nestled on the outer slopes of the Drakensberg mountains, standing at an elevation of 1,302 meters above sea level, with Mount Currie rising prominently to a height of 2,224 meters behind it. The municipality is a significant transport hub, traversed by the National N2 Route, which connects major economic nodes between Durban and East London, as well as the R56 and R626 routes. It shares borders with several other municipalities and the Lesotho hinterland to the north-west.Historically, Kokstad holds significant importance as it was named after the Griqua Chief Adam Kok III, who led his people to settle in the area in 1863. The permanent settlement was established in 1871, and it was proclaimed a municipality in 1892, becoming known as the capital of East Griqualand. The rich history of the Griqua people is preserved and showcased at the East Griqualand Museum. The town features several national heritage sites, including the Adam Kok Monument, the ornate 1912 Kokstad Bandstand, the Boy Scouts Monument, and the Cape Mounted Rifles Monument.The economy of Kokstad is diverse, with agriculture being the dominant sector (36%), followed by trade (20%), community services (18%), and finance (16%). The town is particularly renowned as a major center for cheese and other dairy products. For recreation, the area offers ample opportunities for trout fishing, hiking, and bird watching, thanks to its numerous rivers and dams. There are three notable reserves: Mount Currie Nature Reserve, Wilfred Bauer, and Mountain Lake Nature Reserve, which provide scenic picnic spots, walking trails, and a habitat for over 220 bird species. Crystal Dam, fed by the pure waters of Crystal Spring, is a popular spot for boating and angling and serves as the primary source of Kokstad's water supply.
