Pietermaritzburg, often called Maritzburg or PMB, is the capital and second-largest city in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province, situated inland from Durban in the Msunduzi River valley at the base of a tree-covered escarpment. Founded in 1838 by Voortrekkers and later becoming a British colonial center, the city is rich in history, evident in its well-preserved Victorian and Edwardian architecture, including the famous red-brick City Hall, which is the largest red-brick building in the Southern Hemisphere. It holds significant historical importance, notably as the site where Mahatma Gandhi was ejected from a train in 1893, an event that profoundly influenced his philosophy of nonviolent resistance.
