Iten

Iten is a small town located in Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Kenya, positioned along the road between Eldoret and Kabarnet. It sits at an elevation of 2,400 meters (7,900 ft) on the western escarpment of the Gregory Rift, with the Elgeyo escarpment and Kerio River to its east. The town, which had a population of 42,312 in 2019, is characterized by its mountainous countryside and extensive network of hilly dirt roads.Globally recognized as "The Home of Champions," Iten is a mecca for long-distance running, attracting over 5,000 athletes daily, including elite international and local runners. The high altitude provides optimal training conditions, with athletes frequently utilizing the High Altitude Training Center (HATC) and Kamariny Stadium for their rigorous routines. The town's profound contribution to global athletics was formally acknowledged in 2019 when it was declared a global heritage site by the IAAF (now World Athletics), with a prestigious Heritage Plaque unveiled in 2025.Beyond its running fame, Iten offers a rich natural environment and cultural experiences. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Kerio Valley, explore local caves, escarpments, and waterfalls, or observe wildlife such as elephants and buffalos at the nearby Rimoi Game Reserve. Activities like hiking, visiting the Kureswo hot springs, fishing, and paragliding (especially popular from December to January) are also available. The town's name, a local corruption of "Hill Ten," dates back to Joseph Thompson's exploration in 1883, and it has served as a regional administrative center since 1966.
