Senkele Swayne’s Hartebeest Sanctuary

Senkele Swayne's Hartebeest Sanctuary is a vital protected area located in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia, approximately 335 km south of Addis Ababa and 48 km west of Hawassa. Covering an area of 54 km², the sanctuary is nestled within the Ethiopian Great Rift Valley and is managed by the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA). Its primary mission is the conservation of the Swayne's hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus swaynei), an antelope subspecies endemic to Ethiopia and classified as endangered. The sanctuary's open grassland and acacia woodland terrain make it an ideal habitat for these animals, with sightings of the hartebeest being almost guaranteed for visitors.The landscape is characterized by expansive savannah and scattered acacia trees. Visitors can explore the sanctuary via a limited road circuit, often leaving their vehicles for walks with a mandatory local guide. A notable feature is Borena Hill, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding plains and, on clear days, a glimpse of Lake Awassa. Beyond the Swayne's hartebeest, the sanctuary is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including oribi, warthog, defassa waterbuck, bushbuck, Bohor reedbuck, greater kudu, spotted hyenas, serval and civet cats, caracals, common jackals, and olive baboons. It is also a significant birdwatching site, with 91 to 191 recorded bird species, including the globally threatened greater spotted eagle.While the sanctuary was established to protect the Swayne's hartebeest, with current populations estimated between 500 and 800 individuals, it faces challenges such as woody plant encroachment and historical poaching. The best time to visit is during the dry season from October to March. Senkele Swayne's Hartebeest Sanctuary is typically experienced as a day trip, as there are no accommodation or visitor facilities within the park, though camping is permitted without amenities.
