Port Louis

Port Louis, the capital and most populous city of Mauritius, is situated on the island's northwest coast, nestled between a well-sheltered, deepwater harbor and a dramatic semicircle of the Moka Mountains. The city covers an area of 46.7 square kilometers (18.0 sq mi) and had a population of 140,403 in 2022. The island itself is of volcanic origin and is almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs, with a northern plain that rises to a central plateau. Notable natural features in the surrounding area include Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, the highest point at 828 meters, and the Grand River South East and Black River, which are primary sources of hydroelectric power.Founded around 1736 by the French, Port Louis served as a crucial calling place for ships navigating between Asia and Europe around the Cape of Good Hope, and was named in honor of King Louis XV. Its strategic importance continued under British occupation during the Napoleonic Wars. While the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 initially reduced its maritime traffic, the port was modernized in the late 1970s and remains the central hub for all Mauritian imports and exports.
