Maroantsetra

Maroantsetra, historically known as Louisbourg, is a significant market town and port located at the northern end of the Bay of Antongil on Madagascar's northeastern coast. It serves as the capital of the Ambatosoa administrative region and had a population of 42,529 in 2018. The town is approximately 900 kilometers northeast of Antananarivo by air, with the Antainambalana River flowing into its bay. Maroantsetra holds historical importance in Betsimisaraka culture, notably as the starting point for the unification of this tribe by Ratsimilaho. In the 18th century, it was involved in conflicts with Sakalavas and Betsimisarakas against the Comoros and East African countries. Maurice Benyovszky established a colony here in February 1774, including a hospital and a quarantine post on the nearby Nosy Mangabe island.The region is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and is one of Madagascar's wettest areas, receiving an average of 138 inches (350 cm) of rain annually due to trade winds. Maroantsetra acts as the primary gateway to several critical natural attractions, including the expansive Masoala National Park, Makira Natural Park, and the Nosy Mangabe special reserve. These areas are biodiversity hotspots, home to unique wildlife such as the red-ruffed lemur, streaked tenrecs, panther chameleons, and Phelsuma geckos. Visitors can engage in hiking through lush rainforests, snorkeling or diving in vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life, and kayaking along the coastline. The dry season, from May to October, is generally recommended for visits, offering lower rainfall and peak lemur activity.Maroantsetra's local culture is rich and vibrant, characterized by the warm hospitality of its inhabitants. The town celebrates festivals like the Famadihana, or "turning of the bones," and recently hosted the first edition of the SÔROKO Festival, which honored Betsimisaraka traditions with carnivals, traditional games, and sports. The festival's name, SÔROKO, is inspired by a traditional spoon-like utensil used in ceremonies. The local markets offer handcrafted woodwork and textiles, providing unique souvenirs. Culinary delights include traditional Malagasy dishes such as romazava (zebu stew), fresh seafood, sambos, and desserts like koba, complemented by local beverages like ranon'apango. The town is served by Maroantsetra Airport, and while National Road 5 connects it to Toamasina, it is unpaved and in poor condition, making boat travel a common alternative for regional connections.
