Montagu is a charming town nestled in the Western Cape province of South Africa, approximately 180 kilometers (110 miles) from Cape Town. It is situated at the confluence of the Keisie and Kingna rivers, marking the official start of the scenic Route 62, often celebrated as the world's longest wine route. The town serves as the gateway to the Klein Karoo and is dramatically framed by the folded sandstone peaks of the Langeberg Mountains, typical of the Cape Fold Mountain ranges. A memorable introduction to Montagu is the drive through Cogmanskloof, featuring its iconic "hole in the mountain."Founded in 1851 on the farm "Uitvlugt" and named after Colonial Secretary John Montagu, the town boasts a rich history dating back to the early 1800s, with evidence of even older human settlements in local caves.
