Kibiti

Kibiti is an administrative district located in the Pwani Region of Tanzania, with the town of Kibiti serving as its district seat or capital. The district is situated in a geographically significant area, bordering the Mkuranga District and Kisarawe District to its northeast and northwest, respectively. To the east, Kibiti District's boundary is defined by the Mafia Channel, while the Rufiji District lies to its south. The total area covered by Kibiti District is approximately 2,805 square kilometers (1,083 sq mi). The town of Kibiti itself is considered a mid-size populated place, with a recorded population of about 30,163 people. It is located approximately 106.2 kilometers (66.0 mi) from Kibaha, the regional capital of Pwani, and about 392.8 kilometers (244.1 mi) from Tanzania's national capital, Dodoma. The GPS coordinates for Kibiti are -7.721780 latitude and 38.937490 longitude.According to the 2022 census, Kibiti District had a population of 195,638 residents, an increase from 117,752 recorded in the 2012 census. The district is historically home to the Ndengereko and Rufiji peoples. Administratively, Kibiti District is structured into 16 Wards, 58 Villages, 269 Townships, 1 Small Town Authority, 1 Council, 1 Constituency, and 3 Divisions (Mbwera, Kikale, and Kibiti). Key economic activities within the Kibiti ward are predominantly agricultural, focusing on crops such as cassava, sesame, rice, cashews, maize, and millet. The district is also known by the nickname "Home of the Rufiji Delta." Historically, the area was a site of military engagement during the First World War, specifically the Battle of the Rufiji Delta, which occurred between October 1914 and July 1915, involving the German light cruiser SMS Königsberg and British warships.
