Mutukula

Mutukula is a significant border town situated in extreme southern Kyotera District, Uganda, directly adjacent to Mutukula, Tanzania, forming an international border crossing between the two East African nations. The town lies approximately 81 kilometers (50 miles) southwest of Masaka, the largest city in the sub-region, and about 211 kilometers (131 miles) southwest of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. At an elevation of 1,190 meters (3,900 feet) above sea level, Mutukula serves as a crucial entry and exit point for both human and commercial traffic. The Tanzanian side of Mutukula is located in Missenyi District, Kagera Region, approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) northwest of Bukoba, the regional capital. Historically, the settlement on the Tanzanian side of the border was known as Kyebisagazi, with Mutukula itself being a kilometer south on the east side of the Masaka-Bukoba Road (B8).In 2016, the border post implemented merged operations, allowing vehicles and passengers to clear customs and immigration once in the country they are entering, with officials from both nations present. This was further enhanced in 2017 with the conversion to a one-stop-border-post (OSBP), operating 24 hours a day, which has significantly reduced crossing times by 30 to 90 percent. As of July 2009, the population of Mutukula was estimated at 15,000 people. Key points of interest within or near the town include the offices of Mutukula Town Council, Mutukula Airport (a military and civilian facility located about 10 kilometers north), Mutukula prison (a medium-security corrections facility), and the Mutukula central market, which is a regional market.Mutukula also holds historical significance, particularly due to the Battle of Mutukula, which occurred from January 21 to 22, 1979, during the Uganda–Tanzania War. Tanzanian forces captured the town from Ugandan troops and subsequently razed it in retaliation for destruction caused by the Ugandan Army in the Kagera Salient. Following the battle, an airstrip was constructed in Mutukula to resupply troops, and captured military equipment was pressed into service by the Tanzanian People's Defence Force.
