Nyanza Lac

Nyanza-Lac is an administrative commune situated in Makamba Province in southern Burundi, with its capital also bearing the name Nyanza-Lac. The city of Nyanza-Lac is strategically located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, positioned to the south of Mutambara and in close proximity to the border with Tanzania. Its geographical coordinates are approximately 4°20′36″S latitude and 29°36′19″E longitude. The distance from Nyanza-Lac to the regional capital of Makamba is about 32.4 kilometers (20.1 miles), while its distance to Gitega, the capital of Burundi, is approximately 108.3 kilometers (67.3 miles) as the crow flies.The Rwaba River is a significant natural feature, flowing southwest and discharging into Lake Tanganyika just north of Nyanza-Lac. This river plays a crucial role in draining the sedimentary plain of Nyanza-Lac, an area that extends approximately 16 kilometers (9.9 miles) in width and is backed by elevated terrain. The climate data for Nyanza-Lac, based on records from 1961–1990, indicates an average annual daily maximum temperature of around 29.0 °C (84.2 °F) and an average annual daily minimum of 18.6 °C (65.4 °F). The region experiences an average annual rainfall of 1,223.8 mm (48.18 inches), characterized by a pronounced wet season spanning from November to May and a comparatively drier period from June to October.
