Shakawe

Shakawe is a village situated in the northwest corner of Botswana, positioned at the beginning of the Okavango Delta and in close proximity to Namibia and Angola. It serves as a significant gateway to the northern part of the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti area, making it a crucial staging post for travelers heading to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tsodilo Hills, located 40 km away. The village is also a popular starting point for fishing trips in the Okavango Panhandle for Southern African holiday-makers and provides access to the Caprivi Strip. According to the 2022 national census, Shakawe and its associated localities had a total population of 10,589, with the village itself accounting for 6,693 people in the 2011 census. The climate in Shakawe has registered extreme temperatures, with a record high of 39.6 °C (103.3 °F) and a lowest of −6.1 °C (21.0 °F).The area is renowned for its natural beauty, characterized by lush vegetation, winding waterways, and diverse wildlife, particularly within the Okavango Delta. It is a paradise for nature lovers and birdwatchers, home to over 400 bird species, including the African Fish Eagle and Pel's Fishing Owl, as well as larger wildlife like elephants and hippos. Activities such as mokoro (dugout canoe) trips, boat safaris, guided bush walks, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing in the Okavango River are popular. The dry season (May to October) is considered ideal for wildlife viewing, while the wet season (November to April) transforms the landscape into a lush environment, attracting migratory birds.Shakawe also possesses a rich cultural heritage, deeply connected to the BaKwena people who have preserved their customs and way of life. Visitors can engage with local artisans, explore craft markets featuring beadwork, pottery, and traditional textiles, and witness cultural performances. The town hosts various events, including the annual Shakawe Fishing Festival, typically held in August, and the Okavango Delta Cultural Festival. Infrastructure includes Shakawe Airport, which handles direct charter flights, and the village has been connected to the main electric grid. Road travel can be slow, though tarred roads exist, and bus transport is available to Maun. The village is experiencing rapid growth, with shopping centers and various lodges and tented camps like Xaro Lodge, Drotsky's Cabins, and Shakawe River Lodge.
