Kathu

Kathu is a rapidly developing town situated in the heart of the Kalahari Desert in South Africa's Northern Cape province, approximately 1230 meters above sea level. Known affectionately as the "Town under the Trees," its name is derived from the magnificent Camel Thorn forest that defines its landscape. This unique forest, one of only two in the world, was declared a State Forest in the early 1920s and later registered as a Natural Heritage Site in 1995. Spanning approximately 4000 hectares, it provides a vital habitat for over 200 bird species and a diverse array of animal and plant life, including several Red Data, endemic, and protected species. Some of the larger Camel Thorn trees are estimated to be over 300 years old.The town's origins are deeply rooted in the iron ore mining industry, having been established in the late 1960s or early 1970s to support Iscor's mining activities. Kathu gained municipal status in July 1979. It is home to the Sishen Mine, one of the world's largest open-cast iron ore mining operations, where colossal trucks carrying up to 220-260 tons of ore are a common sight. The Sishen-Saldanha railway line, known for transporting some of the world's longest ore trains, connects the mine to Saldanha Bay. Kumba Iron Ore Ltd is the primary operator in the area. Beyond its industrial significance, Kathu is strategically located along the N14 National Route, serving as an important gateway for business travelers and tourists between major centers like Upington, Kuruman, Kimberley, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Windhoek, and Cape Town. The town also features an airport with a tarmac runway.Kathu offers a blend of rugged desert landscapes and modern amenities. Recreational facilities include a world-class golf course, the Sishen Golf Course, which is considered one of South Africa's most beautiful desert courses and consistently ranks among the country's finest. The town also boasts an Olympic-standard swimming bath, tennis courts, and modern club and conference facilities. For nature enthusiasts, nearby attractions include the Witsand Nature Reserve, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Khomani Cultural Landscape, and the Kalahari Meerkat Project. Historically, the area is significant for its rich archaeological heritage, with sites like Kathu Pan revealing evidence of 500,000-year-old stone-tipped spears and Kathu Townlands yielding hundreds of thousands of Earlier Stone Age artifacts, some dating back 700,000 to one million years.
