Zeerust

Zeerust is a commercial town located in the Ngaka Modiri Molema district of South Africa's North West Province. It sits in the Marico valley, about 240 kilometers northwest of Johannesburg, and serves as a key point on the N4, a major road connecting South Africa and Botswana. The surrounding area is characterized by large cattle ranches and farms cultivating wheat, maize, tobacco, and citrus fruits. The region also has fluorite and chromite mines, and tourism is an emerging industry. Two rivers, the Klein-Marico and the Karee spruit, flow through Zeerust, supporting irrigation farming just outside the town. The town provides access to the Madikwe Game Reserve, located approximately 90 kilometers to its north, offering opportunities for wildlife viewing. Zeerust was established on a farm originally named Sefatlhane/Sebatlani, meaning 'dusty place,' which was later renamed Hazenjacht and then Hazia/Hazeah. The town gained official recognition in 1868, with its name, originally Coetzee's Rust, later abbreviated to Zeerust. The N4 road, also known as the Platinum Highway, links Zeerust westward to the Skilpadshek border with Botswana, near Lobatse, and eastward to Swartruggens, Rustenburg, and Pretoria. The R49 road extends northward to the Tlokweng border with Botswana, near Gaborone, and southwest to Ottoshoop and Mafikeng. The Zeerust Chromium Mine, first developed in 1942, operates as both a surface and underground facility, covering 750 hectares and extracting chromite and magnetite.
